Recovery is like a rollercoaster. There are ups and there are downs. Some days are better than others. My weeks are normally broken up into good days and bad days. I would like to think that my week is normally overflowing with good days, but in reality, bad days come a bit too often for me. That’s okay. I know I’m trying my hardest. I have to do things to make myself feel better. I can’t let myself fall back into that black cloud, so I have to cheer myself up by doing simple things. I thought a list of things that make me feel a bit better on a bad day would be a nice first post.
If I feel stressed and angry, I know the minute I go out for a run, I’ll feel better. The only thing I think about is running. I have this app on my phone called Zombie Run; it makes you feel like you’re in a zombie apocalypse. It’s always nice coming home from a run feeling like you’ve saved the world.
- Read a book
Books have always been a great way to escape reality. My room is filled with books. Sometimes just even rearranging my bookshelves takes my mind off everything. That’s because it normally takes me three hours to do because I have so many books. The Stephanie Plum series can make me laugh out loud so I’ve read those books more times than I can count.
- Watch a funny TV show
Sometimes too much is happening in my mind to read a book. So I watch a funny movie or TV show instead. The Office US always makes me laugh without fail. Jim and Pam make me so happy and Dwight and Michael can make me cry with laughter. Putting on my favourite Friends episode always puts me in a good mood too. Anything that is easy to watch and makes me laugh helps a lot.
- Talk to someone
On really bad days when I can’t cheer myself up, I talk. I don’t let myself sit alone in my room and feel sorry for myself any more. I talk to my friends or my parents and tell them how I’m feeling. Even when I don’t want to talk about how I feel, we talk about something else that just takes my mind off it.
- Watch a Disney movie
Watching an old Disney movie always takes me back to my childhood. I like to sing along with all the songs. Let’s be honest, it’s hard to be sad when singing along to Breaking Free from High School Musical.
- Eat your favourite food
It’s always fun to bake a cake, and decorate it in any way you want. Or if you’re lazy like me, just grab a bowl of ice cream and put a thousand sprinkles in it. Or eat fruit. A fruit salad is delicious and guilt free if you’re trying to be healthy!
- Buy nice things for yourself
Getting out the house is better than staying in all day. So I like to go shopping and just look around, it’s nice to treat myself once in a while. A new book or something cute for my room is always exciting. Decorating my room makes my room a happy place.
So there’s my little list of things that I do to make my bad days into good days. As much as I hate to admit it, there are times that I don’t feel better. This is when I try to remember that when I go to sleep, I’ll wake up in a new day and I’ll feel a little better the next day. I can’t wait for all my days to be good days. But right now, things like this get me through the hard times.
