Ah Wolf Alice, a four-piece band from London fronted by Ellie Rowsell, Joel Amey on drums, guitarist Joff Oddie and bassist Theo Ellis, has become one of my favourite bands over this past year. I started listening to them in November of last year and have heard some truly great work from them since.
What first provoked my obsession was the Psychedelic feel to their music, similar to that of Florence and the Machine and Bastille. The track ‘Blush’ is definitely my favourite and has become the chilled sound of my summer. I also love how their recent album ‘My Love Is Cool’ contains both calm songs and grungier feeling ones, such as ‘You’re a Germ’, which reminds me of Foster the People.
They have great songs that will instantly stick in your head. Some examples of their incredible lyrics are below:
You’re a Germ– George rides a bike, to pick her up from school
He likes her cause she’s pure
She likes him cause she heard he’s cool
Curse the things that made me sad for so long
Yeah it hurts to think that they can still go on
I’m happy now
Are you happy now?
Turn To Dust
Keep your beady eyes on me
To make sure I don’t turn to dust
If fear is in the mind, then my mind lives in fear
as deep in this voice then a dirty British sea
This amazing band has been receiving lots of recognition over the last 6-8 months, first appearing on Radio 1’s Sound of 2015 alongside the likes of James Bay and Years & Years. They didn’t make the top 5, but still very impressive. They played Glastonbury, T in the Park, Latitude and will soon be at Reading & Leeds.
What are your thoughts on Wolf Alice?
Will they be put in your playlist?
Summary: Amazing band, so much more to come out of them. They will achieve great things by the end of this year or next.
