Find something to watch on Netflix.
Pretty much any time of genre you want to watch, Netflix will have something for it. Can’t think of anything to watch? Even better; check out netflixroulette.com, where you can find something random to watch. If you don’t have Netflix, fear not! Most content—and even things not on Netflix—can be found on sites such as Putlocker, Megavid, and Sockshare.
Okay, I know, this is the first thing people do when they have nothing else. I know that personally, I’ve spent hours flipping back and forth between screens, waiting for a new tweet or Instagram post. Snapchat is always a go-to for me, because people are constantly updating their stories. Vine is also great; if there’s no new content on your feed, at least there are ‘Explore’ sections in which you can scroll for ages.
Oh, the hours I’ve wasted away on Buzzfeed, finding out how well I remember season four of Gossip Girl and what city I should live in based on my taste in men (Dallas, in case you were wondering. Bleh.) Nonetheless, Buzzfeed’s quizzes really are a great distraction, and lots of fun, too. Because I seem to have a bit of an obsession with personality quizzes, I’ve come across a few really fun ones in my time. Charactour.com is one of my favorites; after answering a series of questions, it will calculate all the fictional characters you’re most and least similar to, which can be really neat to look at. ‘Not Your Typical Personality Types’ isn’t a quiz, but if you know your MBTI, it will show you an in-depth, new perspective. One of the most fascinating (and time-wasting) quizzes is at playalterego.com; this shows you what your life would be like if you lived it all over again. Strange, but fun nonetheless. Last but not least, you.regettingold.com will show you exactly how old you are. And I mean exACTly. How many times your heart has beaten, how many candles on all your birthday cakes to date, how many breaths you’ve taken. Trust me, this website will make even an eight-year-old feel ready to retire.
This is a fun way to have things occupy your mind without you actually really having to do any work. At fantasynamegenerators.com, you can find TONS of made-up names and descriptions for characters, cities, countries, planets—you name it. This is really helpful and inspiring as a writer, too, during a bad case of ‘ohmygodicannotthinkofonemorewordormybrainwillexplode’. If you’re the type of person who loves puns or loves annoying people with them, pungenerator.org is for you. You can type in a word or phrase and get a list of puns containing what you entered. During some of my more severe cases of boredom, this had me laughing on the floor.
Learn a Language.
I mean, if you have nothing else to do, why not? It sounds extremely difficult to learn an entire new language, but really, if you do it little by little and stay motivated, it’s not bad. Duolingo.com (or it’s app, Duolingo) is a life saver. After picking the language you want to learn, it’ll test your existing knowledge of it to see where to begin. And if you don’t have any pre-existing knowledge, no worries! It works with you and helps you achieve the goals you set, slowly but surely teaching you a new language.
Watch this Clock.
If you’ve ever wanted to see the time of day translated into a color (which I know you do), whatcolourisit.scn9a.org is AMAZING. Whatever time of day it is where you’re at, it’ll show you in a color and clock. It’s not much for long-lasting boredom, honestly, but it is pretty cool to look at for a while.
… The Best of All Websites.
How many hours of my life have I spent on theofficestaremachine.com, hours that should have been spent on homework or work or studying? Too many for my own good, probably, but I can’t be blamed. If you’re a fan of ‘The Office’ (if you aren’t, my only question is, why) this website is monumental. I mean it. I would give up every other website the Internet had to offer in favor of just this one. Type in any emotion into the search box, and boom—you now have clips from the show expressing that emotion to you. I can’t even explain how life changing this is. Probably the best day of my entire existence was when I discovered this via Tumblr.
