I sit here now writing this to tell you, my fellow readers, why Quentin Tarantino is an excellent filmmaker. For many, I’m sure you realise this already but to the less-experienced film-goers here, let me introduce you to The Tarantino UNIVERSE.
- Okay so let’s take Pulp Fiction…a classic and favourited by many. The film is not told in chronological order (a little thing Tarantino is known for) and the plot itself heavily revolves around drugs. The thing Tarantino does best as a director is the fact that he doesn’t glamourise it, he tells it how it is. The film features people under the influence of cocaine, heroin etc. as well as showing the negative side e.g. Mia’s overdose. You see how drugs can affect people and how he acknowledges this whilst still telling the story.
- No Tarantino film is really complete without a bit of gruesome violence and BLOOD (a lot of it). The overdramatic squirting of blood and gory violence is what makes Tarantino films very unique. Lots of directors tend to pan away from a character who has just been injured but Tarantino does quite the opposite and tends to focus or zoom in. Take Kill Bill (Vol 1 & 2) as well as Django Unchained, all perfectly good examples of violence and bloody moments shown throughout this fantastic directors work.
- Another thing Tarantino does well is create original characters. Mr Orange & Mr White (help me, my heart is breaking) are characters that I can’t think of being in any film other than of course, Reservoir Dogs. Tarantino also uses a lot of the same actors for his films, for example; Uma Thurman stars in Pulp Fiction as well as Kill Bill, Samuel L. Jackson is also in Pulp Fiction and Django Unchained and finally…MY ALL TIME FAVOURITE, TIM ROTH who features in Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs AND Tarantino’s upcoming film The Hateful Eight. (You can notice little cameos by recurring actors in a LOT of Tarantino films, there are quite a few [coughs] Michael Madsen, Steve Buscemi and Harvey Keitel!)
- THE MUSIC , OH MY GOD. Quentin Tarantino creates amazing soundtracks to his films, check out the Pulp Fiction soundtrack, I promise you will not be disappointed! He once told an interviewer that he has a huge vinyl collection and when compiling songs to use for a film he listens to them all and decides on his favourites (that is DEDICATION). All of his films have fabulous soundtracks, literally go and listen to them after watching one of his films whether it’s Inglourious Basterds, Reservoir Dogs (a personal favourite) or Django Unchained you will be astounded.
So here we have it, I could go on and on about this man. He’s a real inspiration to me and I truly respect him SO much! As well as all that he is an absolute sweetheart, a weird, strange sweetheart but a sweetheart never-the-less! He loves the fans response to his work and takes the time to show his appreciation. (Watch the Comic Con 2015 Hateful Eight panel and you will see what I mean! Tim Roth is also there and has an amazing voice, thank me later.)
