Or something very fortunate, actually – for those of you who didn’t know, an immensely popular book series may be coming to a television near you. The worldwide acclaimed “A Series of Unfortunate Events” is a 13 part novella written by Lemony Snicket (the pen name of author Daniel Handler) which follows the lives of 3 siblings. Violet, Klaus and Sunny Baudelaire embark on a journey to piece together the mystery of their parents’ death whilst on the run from the infamous Count Olaf; an unruly, callous man who tries to steal their inheritance.
After rumours began to circulate on Twitter late last month about a possible TV adaptation, fans went wild, including myself. My fascination with the film as a little girl rapidly grew into a full-blown obsession, forcing me to “borrow” many of the books from my old Primary school library, which in time earned me some iffy looks from the librarian. They still remain on my bedroom shelf to this day… sorry Mrs Shaw.
A supposed poster for the upcoming Netflix series was released online to the public, sparking the initial interest, however it turned out to be fake, and immediately I felt as if I had been crushed by the full weight of Aunt Josephine’s refrigerator.
Then, on July 5th, a teaser trailer uploaded by a Youtube User under the alias “Eleanora Poe” provoked yet another frenzy. The clip showed the grotesque paraphernalia of Olaf’s mansion and captured the tone of the story perfectly, illustrating a much darker nature that the 2004 film seemed to hold back on. Sadly, Netflix made a statement the same day claiming “This was not released from Netflix.” Despite the trailer’s professionalism and breath-taking cinematography, it too was fan-made.
So, after all of the confusion, is the series being made or not?
The answer is yes! Netflix are already undergoing plans for its creation with the imagination behind it all, Daniel Handler, serving as Executive Producer. It is expected to hit living rooms this autumn. If you appreciate a mixture of humour, suspense and eerie atmospherics, then this is one to look out for.
