Back to school is already here, and it seems summer just flew by. If you can spare a moment or two during the beginning of the semester/term, why not relax and enjoy a movie, right? But, of course, when you just finished three hours of homework and have two exams the next day, the last thing you want to be doing is sobbing all night over Titanic.
What you need are some feel-good, lighthearted, quick and easy pick-me-up movies! And if they’re movies about high school kids you can relate to, even better. Try out a couple of these when you have a chance, take your mind off work and school, and just sit back, laugh, and enjoy the film.
If you haven’t seen this, you need to. Immediately. It’s like, the most iconic high school movie of all time, even if it is set back in the ‘olden days’ with drive-in movies and sock hops. It is a little long, so perhaps save it for when you have more time? It’s sure to make you feel happy (and in the mood to dance and sing about cars), and besides, you may even pick up a few good 50s insults or pickup lines to use at school, yeah?
Quite possibly the best movie ever made. Cher Horowitz is the epitome of female role models. It’s a pretty short movie, too (I can’t count the number of times I’ve watched it on my phone during school) and a genuine pick-me-up. It’s funny, it’s cute, it’ll make you happy. And, of course, young Paul Rudd. What more is there to say?
John Tucker Must Die
A bunch of teenage girls plotting to ruin the life of a cheating guy? Sign me up. Not only is this movie hilarious and awesome, it also has Girl Power. Is there anything better?
10 Things I Hate About You
OH MY GOD. I could really, honestly, genuinely go on about this movie for hours. Feminist queen Kat Stratford who doesn’t take sh*t from anybody, young Joseph Gordon Levitt and Heath Ledger, and fake dating trope?! This movie really has everything. It empowers teenage girls through a modern retelling of Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew, and is quite simply just hilarious. I’ve seen this movie a dozen times and I’m still not sick of it in the least.
Ferris Bueller’s Day Off
Again with the 80s movies, except this one has an unnecessary musical feature, which makes it even better! Whether you’re the Cameron Frye or Ferris Bueller of your school, it’ll make you laugh and relax, and maybe even give you a few ideas on how to convincingly play hookie.
Really, though, who doesn’t love Emma Stone and want to see her shining face on your screen during times of trouble? Easy A deals with navigating high school through somewhat difficult times and awful peers with only wit and strength as defenses. Definitely, DEFINITELY a must-see, during the school year or not.
Did you really think this wouldn’t be on the list? Perhaps the most iconic movie of our generation? Hello school, hello mean girls. They just go hand in hand, don’t they. At any rate, it’s always a fun and quick film to watch on a weekday night off or on a weekend sleepover with friends. Really, there’s never a bad time for Mean Girls.
