The 70s are back and they are bigger than ever! Celebs from Alexa Chung to Victoria Beckham have been seen embracing the flared jeans – but how do you pull off such an eye-catching look without looking like you’re dressing up in your nan’s clothes? It’s all about trying not to look like a parachute.
What I mean by this is: if you prefer full on flares that fan out from the thighs, go for a slimmer/shorter top (a shirt that’s not too loose, or a crop). If you like the more up-to-date, slimmer fitting flares, then think about opting for a looser fitting top – perhaps something a bit bohemian like a loose, off-shoulder top. But at the end of the day, what are the 70s really about? Having fun! As long as you feel happy and comfortable in what you’re wearing, then you wear it!
If flared jeans give you war-flashbacks to Gymboree classes and psychedelic parents, then perhaps you’ll be embracing another area of the 70s trend. Why not try a bold print, a fringe bag, or a slightly more subtle gypsy top? With festival season soon to be in full swing, it’s almost a certainty that we’ll be seeing all numbers of these trends on the fields. It’s a tricky era to pull off, but just don’t mix too many trends at once! Go for a denim shorts/white shirt/flared bag number. Or a statement print dress. Really, the ways you can mix this up is numerous and you’ll be getting lots of help from every shop on the high street as they adapt the trend in their own particular way!
So play that funky music and whack out the flares!
